Discussion Groups

WHY USE GROUPS?

One objective of MRI is to promote and facilitate discussion among members of the global change in mountains research community about topics of interest to that community. Such discussions can involve only a subset of the community, can focus on quite specific issues, and can last only as long as is needed by their participants.

MRI Groups offer an alternative to conducting such discussions via email. This alternative offers numerous advantages

  • Groups store and display the flow of a discussion, a function that would require opening and comparing multiple windows in an email client.
  • Groups present the entirety of a discussion to all participants equally, something that is not assured when individual participants manage their own email clients separately.
  • Groups can be linked to a library of common documents available to all participants, something that again cannot be ensured with attachments to email.

MRI uses Groups to support many of its other program elements such as the Global Commission and its Synthesis Workshops. MRI will launch additional Groups at participant request.
MRI currently use two Group solutions: one associated with Mountain.TRIP and implemented with Joomla, and a second associated with the Mountain Forum and implemented with Drupal.
