EDITORIAL

Communication is important. Without appropriate communication, cooperation is not possible nor does it yield the expected results.

Communication is not simply a transfer of information, but also carries the imprint of those in charge. To date, most of the S4C communication was coordinated by Astrid Bjornsen Gurung, Claudia Drexler and Yurij Bihun. From 2014 on, Dominik Kaim, the new S4C Communication Manager, takes over the reins!

The idea behind Dominik's inclusion is to establish an "information center of gravity" located closer to the Carpathians and to give more attention to this central task. We all know that communication cannot be done by a single individual but is only possible as a joint S4C community effort. For this reason, we want to try a new communication channel: the S4C LinkedIn group (see NETWORK). If there is anything of interest to the community, just share it with us!

New technologies are important, but nothing compares to face-to-face meetings. For S4C, such an occasion is Forum Carpaticum - one of the most important achievements of the S4C Community.

The nearest opportunity is in mid-September in Lviv, Ukraine (see EVENTS).

The S4C Newsflash has been following a standard format but as we evolve and change, we are trying to make it more relevant and compeling. We are expanding to a new section including all kinds of "light" news items, as well as photographs, video, graphics and cultural pieces to add to our science (see CARPATHIAN SCIENCE (OR NOT) RELATED).

Changes are natural, but your opinion matters here. We will try to prepare the best Newsflash possible, but we would like to ask you for the patience and support. Feel free to send us your ideas and comments. And keep your finger crossed!

ON S4C COMMUNICATION

As of January 2014, Dominik Kaim, Jagiellonian University will be in charge of managing all aspects of S4C communications. Having a designated communication person in the region gives more possibilities to share local, Carpathian information within the community. Plans for 2014 are focused on the further development of internal communication (mainly by LinkedIn group) and launching the new S4C website. Yurij Bihun will continue to contribute editorial support and the North American perspective (thanks a lot Yurij !).

At this point, we would like to thank Astrid Björnsen Gurung and Claudia Drexler for all the great work done so far for S4C Community in the field of communication! Hoping that they will still share their experience on how to make mountain scientists talk to each other and exchange views and results, we would like – on behalf of the S4C community – to express our gratitude for their continuous support. Astrid, Claudia: we would not climb so high without you!

Luboš Halada & Jacek Kozak

Mechanisms for an Entente artistic project

In 2013 an artistic project Mechanisms for an Entente was developed in four Carpathian countries. The initiative analyzed the evolving political context that led to the birth and disappearance of the train line named "Silesia Cracoviana Karpathy" connecting Warsaw to Bucharest via Kraków, Košice, Budapest and Cluj. Among the many initiatives within the project, discussions with artists and researchers (historians, transport specialists, geographers) were organized. The outcome of the project was an exhibition presented in Kraków, Košice and Budapest during autumn 2013 followed by two additional exhibitions that will take place in Bordeaux during Spring 2014.
