FOCUS

The interdisciplinary AfroMont-Mt Kilimanjaro Research Group meeting will bring together researchers working on African mountains. The conference theme will be "African mountain ecosystems under global change: Linking biodiversity, biotic interactions and biogeochemical ecosystem processes". The meeting will take place from 22 to 26 February 2017 and will be hosted by the Mt Kilimanjaro research programme.

From the last conference in Addis Ababa 2015, the following statement was drafted by delegates:
"We, as diverse African mountain researchers, aim to ensure that African decision makers understand that natural resources associated with mountains need to be maintained for current and future livelihoods in African countries, and that concerted actions now need to be taken now to ensure that this happens. This action is linked to environmental governance systems, along with research, stakeholder consultation and environmental and human rights and justice – and need to be developed urgently. We reiterate the need for long term monitoring in African mountains to pick up trends, along with a commitment from funders and governments to be able to do focused long term research."
