 1. GLOCHAMORE Research Strategy

The GLOCHAMORE Research Strategy provides a negotiated settlement between MBR managers and global change researchers on what kind of research is needed in mountain regions as a response to global environmental change.

The GLOCHAMORE Research Strategy is based on the inputs from the four thematic workshops, which were discussed and compiled during the research strategy meeting in September 2005 (Vienna, Austria). The first draft of the Strategy was presented, reviewed and discussed at the Open Science Conference on “Global Change in Mountain Regions” in October 2005. The inputs were compiled in a temporarily expanded version of the strategy, which was again reviewed by the GLOCHAMORE consortium, MBR representatives, interested conference participants and selected Global Change specialists. The final version of the Research Strategy (an extended and a short version) were made available to the broader public by mid December 2006.

2. Open Science Conference

2.1 Book Publication

Based on the Open Science Conference in Perth, a comprehensive book with 154 extended abstracts (10 plenary and 144 oral presentation) was prepared by Martin Price:

“Global Change in Mountain Regions”. Sapiens Publishing, Duncow: xxxii + 343 pp. 2006.

(not open access; Sapiens Publisher not existing anymore)

2.2 Webcast

The MRI financed and organized the technical equipment and software needed for real-time casting the plenary presentations of the OSC on the web. A webcast of the Keynotes at the Open Science Conference is available via the internet:

2.3 Perth Declaration

The Perth Declaration developed by Thomas Schaaf, UNESCO-MAB, and other consortium members expresses the commitment of the representatives of National Committees of UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme, managers of Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage Sites, and members of the scientific community to engage in future global change research in mountain regions, particular in MBRs. The document has been further elaborated during the Open Science Conference and endorsed by the participants on the final day.

2.4 Film Night

As a side-event of the OSC, the MRI organized and financed the film night on October 4 on “Changing Mountains”. The program was a mix of short films related to the conference topic and ended with a participatory video documentation “Himalayan Voices” produced by InsightShare:

3. Workshop Documents

3.1 Reports

The workshop reports summarize the main findings of each workshop giving recommendations for future global change research in mountain regions. As a result of early discussions during the Entlebuch workshop, detailed information is generally provided on different levels of scientific sophistication: minimum, medium, and maximum. There was a general consensus that the research actions proposed should take into account the various levels of technical knowledge and skills available in a certain MBR and similarly, the financial capacities of local research organizations and of the MBR management.

3.3 Synthesis Articles in Mountain Research and Development

In collaboration with the Scientific Project Manager and other workshop participants, the organizers of the four thematic GLOCHAMORE workshops published peer-reviewed synthesis papers containing research recommendation for Global Change research in mountain regions, in particular Mountain Biosphere Reserves.

3.4 Workshop Proceedings

Thanks to the initiative of UNESCO-MAB (Thomas Schaaf and Cathy Lee), the abstracts and articles submitted for the thematic workshops were published in proceedings. While the launching workshop in Entlebuch and the monitoring workshop in Vienna yielded separate proceedings, the results of the workshops in Aquila and Granada were merged in one publication. Due to constraints of time and human resources, no proceedings were published from the last workshop in Samedan. Instead, the extended abstracts of the Samedan workshop were formatted and attached to the Samedan workshop report. The proceedings have been published by UNESCO and are available on the web: www.unesco.org/mab/mountains/publications.htm
